I have the ono to refer to your confidential

despatch of 27th June, 1939, regarding the proposal to

remove the barracks and other buildings occupied by the

infantry battalion stationed in the central district of

Victoria and on Victoria Peak from their present sites

to another less valuable site away from the centre of the

city.

The General Officer Commanding the British

Troops in China has now informed me that owing to the

war in Europe he no longer has funds available for this

project. It has therefore become necessary to suspend

further consideration of the scheme described in my

confidential (2) despatch of 30th January, 1939, and

my confidential despatch of 25th April, 1939, until

the military authorities intimate that they are in a

position to proceed.
